There are several ways to customize Sales Portal to meet your business requirements without programming modifications. One of the best is the User Dropdown Boxes.   The User Dropdown Boxes are searchable fields so they allow a level of segmentation beyond what is normally provided.  Later we will see the customization of field names which is very useful.

 

But, when you are interfacing with diverse sales forces and user accross many locations Drop Downs add an additional use capabilities that text fields do not.  Not everyone spells the same way or even speaks the same languages.  What the Drop Down Boxes allow you do is create your own topical area with predefined choices which your users can then select.  This generally makes it much easier to collect useable information about a contact...spellings and choices are consistant to start with...which then allows easy segmenation and searching.
